Biography

Welcome to First Grade!  My name is Jenny Monaco and this is my 14th year of teaching 1st Grade!  This is my 2nd year teaching at Oak Valley Elementary!  I have had an amazing experience with our students here.  Our  families are fantastic, and they have a special place in my heart!  A little bit about me...I am married (my husband's name is Al).  I have 3 boys- Zander is 17, Karson is 6, and Reid is 4.  I have 1 crazy dog named Ralphie.  I love to play with my kids and go to the zoo.  I love to read books and watch movies.  I love to go camping and be outdoors!  My favorite color is purple!  I graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2003 with my Bachelor's in Elementary Education and I took all of the coursework for Early Childhood.  I received my ESL endorsement from Concordia University in 2007.  I graduated from Peru State with my Master's in Curriculum and Instruction in 2008.  I love teaching first grade!

Academics

We are busy learning in First Grade! In Reading, we will learn about short and long vowels, vowel combinations, nouns, verbs, adjectives, contractions, compound words, using comprehension skills, reading exciting books, and so much more! In Math, we will add, subtract, count money, tell time, use data and record it, learn about shapes, measure, etc. In Writing, we are learning that we are authors. In Spelling, we are learning how to spell words using games and different word skills. In Social Studies, we are learning how to be a Secret Kindness Agent, all about our country, our past, etc. In Science, we are learning how to be a scientist, about living things, matter, and the Earth & sky! This is just a small selection of the things we will do in First Grade!  Most importantly we are working on being RESPECTFUL, HAVING FUN, and FOLLOWING OUR RULES!!!

I do ask that every student reads a book every night.  Practicing reading and discussing their book with someone at home will help  the students to be more confident in their reading and develop a love for books!

If you have access to a computer, students can practice their reading and math skills on the lab links under the Library tab at the top of the page.  Also, the Omaha Public Libraries have free internet use for students.
